‘Market Garden’ Watercolour Paintings are inspired by an unlikely source: my local veg box scheme. As a long-time vegetarian and Buddhist practitioner, I was immediately drawn to Peapod thanks to their strong ethical stance, organic farming methods and love for the land – not to mention their delicious vegetables! But it was the aesthetic beauty and vibrancy of the produce that inspired this collection. With my eye for detail and innate sensitivity to the natural world, I am celebrating the wonder and variety of my weekly veg box in these lush and vivid watercolour paintings.
These latest works pick up on themes from my earlier exhibition: 2018’s ‘Fruit Saloon’. Where I exhibited natural pigment paintings of Peruvian fruit and vegetables, made during a residency in the Amazon jungle.
These ‘Market Garden’ watercolour paintings are a vivid celebration of local food production, deeply rooted in my chosen hometown of Hastings. I hope to inspire many more local residents to explore the exciting possibilities of small-scale, environmentally sound, organic farming and maybe even sign up for their own veg boxes. I hope to encourage us all to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the everyday by offering a precious insight into the wonder and delight that can be found all around us – even in a humble box of vegetables.
