Fruit Saloon Watercolour Paintings
On returning to London from Peru, I created for ‘Fruit Saloon’ a series of watercolour paintings of exotic fruit using synthetic colours. These were made in response to my experience of coming back to London with a new perspective of the urban way of living and how unnatural and the relationship with the food we eat and where it comes from felt after an experience of life in rural Peru.
Outside the cities in Peru I became aware of how living off the land was normal and so natural for the people I met. To be able to eat pineapples that had grown in your garden for example or to see chickens roaming free all day before going back to their respective homes to roost at dusk.
In contrast, on my return to London – a jungle of concrete and glass – Initially it was amazing to have so much more choice and variety. Something I love about this city is the diversity which felt very apparent when I was working on these paintings.
I hope the works from both this series and also Fruit Saloon Natural Pigment Paintings reflect this experience in a way that highlights the differences in both environments and opens a discussion for what makes something exotic. I hope these works offer the viewer an opportunity to reflect on the relationships we have with our local environments and leaves space to open discussion around the food we eat and how we relate to our environments.
