with Market gardener’s questions with  Abby & Thad of Pea Pod Veg.

Pea Pod Veg immediately sparked my inspiration to create a series of watercolour paintings. What I find so inspiring about Pea Pod Veg  is that they keep their farm to a small scale and supply local businesses and make veg box deliveries to the Hastings area. This means they are able to supply fresh, nutritious, seasonal vegetables. They are members of the Landworksers Alliance and also part of La Via Campesina, an international movement bringing together millions of peasants, small and medium size farmers, landless people, rural women and youth, indigenous people, migrants and agricultural workers from around the world. Also holding a strong emphasis on food sovereignty and Agroecology. Food sovereignty, the right to food that is healthy, culturally appropriate, produced via ecologically sound and sustainable methods. Agroecology being the study of ecological processes applied to agricultural production systems, is also at the centre of Peapod’s values.

The paintings for this exhibition are concerned with the beauty of the vegetables that grow locally in Sussex and the UK. I am really enthused by the variety of vegetables that are grown at Pea Pod Veg and also the element of surprise as to what will arrive one week to the next. They appear on my doorstep, in a range of colours and textures. But also I really admire the strong ethical stance of Pea Pod Veg and for all they are doing for the land and the local ecosystems. Their vision for the bigger picture and also love of vegetables.

This Exhibition leads on nicely from my 2018 exhibition ‘Fruit Saloon’ where I exhibited natural pigment paintings she made during my residency in the Amazon jungle.  These natural pigment paintings feature fruit and veg grown in Peru. I made a range of natural pigments using materials that had been foraged locally. These included earth, clay, stones from local rivers, bark from trees and crushed seeds.

Market Garden will be on display at The Crown Between the 1st and 31st of August 2019. The Crown is a lovely award winning pub in Hastings Old Town. Having most recently been awarded Parliamentary Pub of the year 2019 for the South East and taking third place overall. The Crown are known for having a great menu of locally sourced food and drinks available changing with the seasons.
